The bottom-placed Mariners have lost their last five, conceding 12 goals in the process. Last week’s trip to Adelaide resulted in a 2-0 defeat, despite taking 23 shots to Adelaide’s 12.
Sydney FC have won 13 of their 15 games and are unbeaten since Week 3. But after their bye was followed up by their derby with Wanderers being washed out, the runaway A-League leaders looked underdone in a 4-0 hammering at the hands of Yokohama F. Marinos in the ACL on Wednesday – their first game in nearly three weeks.
The Mariners boast just one win and three draws from their last 16 clashes with Sydney FC. But they have conceded more than two goals just once in their last eight meetings with the heavyweight Sky Blues. A fifth-minute Kosta Barbarouses goal was enough for a 1-0 home win for the defending champs in Week 10.
Expect the hapless Mariners to bear the brunt of the champs’ frustration at their extended stint on the sidelines and midweek Champions League mauling.
