Paul Gallen vs Justis Huni Preview
Last time it was ‘Big Daddy’ Lucas Browne, before that ‘Big Bad’ Barry Hall, ‘Hoppa’ had a crack, so too former MMA fighter, one time pro wrestler, and now 47-year-old Mark Hunt, all of which, bar Cronulla supporters and a few die hard Blues fans, we hoped would finally knock Paul Gallen out. We’ve all waited a while, but The Wolf thinks that time has finally come.
Gal, (or the G-train as he goes by these days) is tough, no doubt about it. And he’s overachieved in his boxing career. Most didn’t think he could get past Barry Hall who had success as a junior amateur boxer and was touted by the legendary conditioner Johnny Lewis as having the ability to become an Australian titleholder. That match ended in a controversial draw.
The Hunt fight did little to appease the doubters of Gallen’s ability or the sincerity of his boxing endeavours but the Browne fight appeared, on paper anyway, to be his first actual real test against a boxer of repute.
Unfortunately for fight fans, the Lucas Browne that stepped in the ring was a shadow of the fighter who once controversially held a recognised world title. He was soft, lethargic and underdone and seemed more interested in getting out of the ring and to the ATM to check his bank balance from his last-ditch payday than he did in being in the ring trading blows with a former front rower.
Justis Huni is anything but that. At just 22 he is the youngest fighter Gal has taken on since Parramatta front rower Junior Paulo in 2016. He’s had a strong amateur grounding including medalling in the Super Heavyweight division of the World Amateurs in 2019. He is ten years younger than the combined average of all of Gallen’s opponents, half of which have been ex or current footballers, four have also been debutants and all bar one have been cross-code fighters. And Huni is the only fighter with more than two pro fights that Gallen has fought with an unbeaten record. Not to mention he is Olympics bound, of which he’s been in full training for, for some time thanks to COVID and he is considered a real chance of medalling there. And not for a minute would one of Gallen’s past twelve opponents have been close to even getting a mention for a seat that plane, period.
Aside from being 17 years Gallen’s junior, Huni is also four inches taller, has six inches further reach and still is surprisingly five kilos heavier off their last weigh-ins. In short, he’s a beast of a human.
Weights, measures and resumes aside, the key here is that this one is set down for ten rounds. Something Gal has not only never fought, but never had to train for. And also a format Huni has a 3 from 3 record in with two early round KO’s and going the distance in his most recent fight.
Huni is fast for a big man, possesses a knockout punch but most importantly he is lethal when he rips the body. Paul Gallen will know he is in a real fight here, and he’ll know about it fairly early on.
Gal will come at him hard early like he always does, but more so this time knowing he is vulnerable stepping out in trip. Rest assured Huni has superior skills to fend off this kind of attack and once this initial flurry is over and the two start to square off, The Wolf’s tipping the damage to the body will start to show leaving Gallen at an all or nothing stage of the fight fairly early on.
It’s hard to see this going 4, with 2 and 3 looking particularly good value. And double down on the under 5.5 total rounds at $1.88.
