Melbourne Storm vs Gold Coast Titans Preview

Melbourne needs to keep winning to seal a top four berth – and the importance of that won’t be lost on the Storm after their elimination final exit at home after finishing fifth last year.

A big win over Gold Coast would just about do the job ahead of a tough final-round assignment in Brisbane.

The Titans halted an eight-match losing streak against the Storm via an extraordinary 38-34 victory at home in Round 3.

The underdogs lured the heavyweights into a shootout and were too slick, with Alofiana Khan-Pereira and Aaron Schoupp both picking up doubles.

Gold Coast collected its only win in eight visits to AAMI Park back in 2014. Melbourne has won the four matches at the venue since by at least 16 points.

The uncharacteristically up-and-down Storm banked consecutive wins for the first time since June, following up a 48-2 rout of Canberra at home with a comparatively unconvincing 38-28 defeat of lowly St George Illawarra in Wollongong.

Will Warbrick bagged a first-half hat-trick and the ever-improving Eli Katoa scored two crucial tries in quick succession to put the Storm back in front, but they didn’t seal it until Jahrome Hughes’ 77th-minute try.

Josh King is out for Melbourne so Nelson Asofa-Solomona will start at lock. But the big news on the Storm team list is Ryan Papenhuyzen has been named in the reserves.

Gold Coast has lost seven of its last eight, falling off defensively in the past fortnight – coinciding with the end of the club’s finals hopes – in heavy defeats to Cronulla (36-6) and Penrith (40-14), there’s a sense that this is a team looking forward to the end of the season.

The Titans have lost Jayden Campbell and Phil Sami for their remaining games, but Kieran Foran and Jojo Fifita are back to replace the duo.

The Storm have won seven straight at AAMI Park – the last three by a combined 126 points to 18 – and look likely to continue the Titans’ recent defensive pain in a one-sided affair.
