These adversaries have been similarly affected by the Origin series opener. Canberra are without heart-and-soul prop Josh Papalii and halves spearhead Jack Wighton, while Sydney Roosters surrender James Tedesco, Daniel Tupou and Lindsay Collins to rep duty.

The 5-7 Raiders have turned their season around, following up 20-point upsets of the Sharks and Rabbitohs with a spirited 28-20 loss to the Eels in a high-quality Round 12 fixture. Jamal Fogarty slotted in seamlessly in his first match in the Raiders’ No.7 jersey.

Matt Frawley will return to plug a halves hole, while Corey Harawira-Naera and Trey Mooney join the Canberra bench.

The 7-5 Roosters are still feeling their way through the season but have won three of their last four to stay in touch with the top four. The heavyweights bounced back from a 32-12 loss to the Panthers with arguably their best performance of the season in Round 12, a Tedesco-led 36-16 thrashing of the high-flying Sharks.

Joey Manu will relish the opportunity to play fullback, while Billy Smith comes onto a wing and Egan Butcher is the new face in the forward contingent.

The Roosters have won six of their last eight against the Raiders, including a pair of big wins last season. The Tricolours prevailed 44-16 in Gosford in Round 12 and 40-16 in Mackay in Round 25. But the last eight encounters in Canberra – with the Raiders winning five – have been decided by 1-12 margins, including five by four or less.

It’s not surprising to see the Roosters as warm favourites and there’s an argument the Raiders are more significantly impacted by their Origin absentees. But they’ve got some momentum and still boast a ton of experience and attacking flair – expect another close one in the capital.
