The Canberra Raiders lost the 2019 NRL Grand Final and come into this game a little different. Their whole right side from last season is gone for Round 1. Only John Bateman remains with the club (due back in Round 8). Instead, the Raiders are sending out new half, George Williams, to work with Corey Horsburgh, Curtis Scott and Bailey Simonsson on the right side. It’s going to take some getting used to in attack. Jack Wighton, Elliot Whitehead, Jarrod Croker and Nick Cotric should have things under control on the left edge, though. Especially against a Gold Coast Titans side that leaked plenty of points out wide in 2019.
The Titans are on a good path but look set to open this season without AJ Brimson and Moeaki Fotuaika. They’re two huge losses in a side that already struggles for depth. A strong pack allows them to be competitive, but the Raiders proved last year that they can see out the full 80 minutes – an area the Titans struggled. This won’t be the best version of the Raiders we will see all season, but they’ll be too strong at home.
