The defending champion Wildcats ultimately got up 108-107 in overtime in Perth after a memorable duel between Bryce Cotton (42 pts, 6 ast) and Scott Machado (31 pts, 8 reb, 9 ast), the players voted the NBL’s two best this season. The Taipans led by nine at halftime with DJ Newbill doing a defensive job on Cotton. But the Wildcats’ – and Cotton’s – championship qualities came to the fore in a cliffhanger.
But the Taipans levelled the series – and again covered the line – with an 85-74 victory in Cairns. The hosts laid the platform in the first quarter, building a 14-point lead. Cameron Oliver (22 pts, 19 reb) was inspirational, while the Wildcats did not have a player on the same level.
The teams’ three regular-season clashes this season all came in the first 10 weeks. The Taipans banked wins in Perth (99-79) and Cairns (91-84), before the Wildcats struck back on the road (88-84).
The Wildcats are an imposing 12-3 at home, winning their last six straight in Perth. The Taipans are 5-10 on the road.
Home-court advantage is massive here. But while the Wildcats’ playoffs experience should get them into another grand final, the Taipans are irresistible to keep their ATS streak going in what should be another classic.
