It was a heart stopper for Dogs fans last round as they almost lost to the Blues for the second time this season. A five goal plus Dogs lead in the fourth quarter was in jeopardy as Carlton stormed home to lose by just three points. The sons of the west will have their work cut out against them against the Pies on Sunday afternoon at Marvel Stadium based on recent showings.
The two sides met in round 4 at the MCG where Collingwood saluted by 14 points, despite the Dogs leading at three quarter time. Brodie Grundy was dominant in the ruck with 58 hitouts and 23 touches as the Dogs inability to field a competitive ruckman proving their undoing. Time hasn’t made that problem any better for the Dogs, who rank last in the AFL for hitouts.
They are a poor 5-7 agains the handicap this season, while the Pies are just as bad at 5-7. Marvel Stadium has been a friend of Collingwood’s in recent seasons, with the black and white going 6-1 at the ground since 2017. Their form against the Dogs is less than spectacular, winning just two of the past five between the sides. The Wolf fancies the Doggies to keep it close and they have sprung some big surprises as huge outsiders already this season, namely Richmond, so can’t be discounted despite patchy form.
