Two of the 2020 pre-season premiership favourites are on opposite trajectories.
Fourth-placed West Coast Eagles have won seven straight, with all but one of those victories (against fellow big gun Geelong) coming by 22 points or more. They comfortably accounted for Hawthorn 12.9 (81) to 7.7 (49) in round 13.
Jeremy McGovern returned from a four-match absence in fine style, Nic Naitanui’s purple patch continued, Luke Shuey and Dom Sheed were terriers in the midfield, and Josh Kennedy and Liam Ryan both kicked three majors. On the downside, Elliot Yeo was added to the Eagles’ injury troubles and Nathan Vardy is also set to miss some footy.
GWS Giants had put together a three-match winning run – their longest of 2020, albeit a fairly unconvincing one – before being belted by the struggling Swans 10.6 (66) to 3.7 (25) in round 12.
The 2019 Grand Finalists are sitting in ninth spot and their soft underbelly has been exposed for all to see.
The Eagles are 8–3 against the Giants and have won the last three encounters, including a 52-point beat down in 2019 that saw Luke Shuey (2 goals, 28 disposals) and Jack Darling (4 goals) shine.
The desperation of the Giants’ situation should keep them in this, but the Eagles are playing too well at present to get tipped up.
