The game was there for the taking at The Gabba on Saturday night but it ultimately slipped out of Port’s hands and they will be looking to bounce back against Hawthorn at home this weekend.
Hawthorn toughed out a win against North Melbourne giving Sam Mitchell his first win in charge of his beloved club that he played 307 games for.
Jack Gunston and Mitch Lewis both kicked three goals for the Hawks and Tom Mitchell racked up 29 possessions.
It was an important win for the Hawks to kick start the season but they are running into a Port side that will be looking to get their season back on track after a disappointing round one performance.
