Melbourne will unfurl their grand old premiership flag in front of their adoring fans in what will truly be a special occasion for anyone whose heart beats true for the red and the blue on Wednesday night.

In a meeting of last season’s grand finalists, a statistical trend does not read well for the runners-up Western Bulldogs who have lost 12 of their last 13 matches against reigning premiers (what a stat!)

Fancy stats aside, the Dogs will have spent all pre-season as to what went wrong after leading by almost three goals in the third quarter of last year’s decider, only to be subject to the greatest blitz of football ever played at the hands of the Demons.

Much will be made about the two best teams up against each other, the matchups, the scores to settle, the quest for revenge.

However, it will be very hard to go past Melbourne in what will be very much a homecoming party given how they couldn’t win the flag at the MCG last year.

Expect the teams to look relatively similar to that of last year’s Grand Final, with a few minor changes, and perhaps the Dogs will be competitive for four whole quarters rather than just pack up shop midway in the third.
