With three losses on the trot, the Hawks are under pressure and sitting two games outside the top eight, winning just three of their past 10 overall. They welcome the reigning premiers to the MCG fresh off a big win against the Bombers last Thursday night. The Eagles peppered the goals all night long against the Bombers, amassing 36 scoring shots and could have won by 15 goals. For the Hawks, their 19-point loss to the Swans leaves them looking unlikely to play finals with just nine rounds to play.
A major concern for coach Alastair Clarkson has been Hawthorn’s forward line. Averaging just 75 points per game, the Hawks rank 14th in the competition for points scored. They are ranked 13th for inside 50s with 51 per game, but can’t find a target up forward who can reliably kick goals. Clarkson has used Pittonet, McEvoy, Roughead and Lewis among others at various stages this season, with little success.
The Eagles don’t have that same headache and despite having less inside 50s per game than Hawthorn, are sixth in the league for scoring at 83 points per game. The new dimensions at Perth’s Optus Stadium have worked wonders for the Eagles, who are 4-0 at the ‘G since 2018, including last year’s Grand Final. The Wolf can’t see how the Hawks get out of their funk against one of the flag favourites.
