The loser of this AFL round 13 preview opener could be out of the play-offs hunt, with Carlton Blues and Gold Coast Suns sitting 12th and 13th on the AFL ladder, respectively.

The Suns have won only one of their last eight after winning their first three following the restart. Stuart Dew’s precocious team was edged out by St Kilda by four points in round 10, drew with Essendon a week later, and put up a brave fight on a five-day turnaround against well-rested Richmond but faded late in a 21-point loss.

Gold Coast’s strenuous schedule caught up with the side in a tired round 12 showing, kicking just one goal and two behinds in the last two quarters after leading at half-time. It doesn’t get a lot easier, however, with just four days to prepare for this assignment.

Carlton have stayed in the mix by bookending convincing losses to Hawthorn and West Coast with narrow wins over battlers North Melbourne and Fremantle. Jack Newnes’s sensational set shot on the siren lifted the Blues to a 5.10 (40) to 5.6 (36) victory against the Dockers, with Charlie Curnow and Patrick Cripps also putting in strong displays.

The Blues have a 7–5 record against the Suns but honours were shared in 2019. The Suns prevailed by two points in round 4, before the Blues turned the tables with a 24-point win in round 18.

An extra two days’ rest and nothing shorter than a six-day turnaround since early July should serve Carlton extremely well against a weary Gold Coast.
