The chance of a top-eight finish realistically sailed for 14th-placed Fremantle Dockers and 15th-placed Sydney Swans weeks ago. But both teams showed some fight during the last four rounds to pick up a pair of wins each.

The Dockers defeated the Magpies and Hawks either side of their round 10 bye, before being pipped on the siren by the Blues on Saturday – a bitterly disappointing outcome in a low-scorer where they led by 19 points at quarter time. Luke Ryan (24 disposals, 5 marks) was a stand-out in Freo’s heartbreaker, while Matt Taberner kicked three of their five goals.

The Swans – hammered by a 53-point margin by the Saints 12 days earlier – carved out their biggest win of 2020 in round 12, a shock 41-point thrashing of cross-town rivals the Giants.

Callum Sinclair was superb all night, Dane Rampe and Lewis Melican pinned down GWS goal-machine Jeremy Cameron, and Luke Parker led the midfield with 29 disposals. But skipper Rampe has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a broken hand.

The Dockers snapped a three-game losing streak against the Swans – in which the margin averaged a whopping 84 points – with a one-point victory in round 18 last year.

These clubs are ranked in the bottom three for points scored this season but are both in the top eight for least points conceded. The under points total shapes as a shrewd option in a match destined to go down to the wire.
