Essendon Bombers vs Richmond Tigers Preview
The AFL round 13 preview heads up to Darwin for the Dreamtime Game.
Essendon Bombers are tenuously placed in 11th after going winless in their last four games. After playing out a pulsating draw with Gold Coast in round 11, the Bombers struggled on a four-day turnaround as they went down to St Kilda by 35 points.
The Bombers’ forward line struggles – exacerbated by a heavy injury toll, headlined by Joe Daniher and Jake Stringer – are reflected in the stats: only four teams have scored less points this season.
Sixth-placed Richmond Tigers are still well below their best but are doing enough to stay in the top-four mix. A fourth-quarter fadeout saw the defending champs go down to the Power by 21 points in round 11 but they recovered to beat the Suns by the same margin on Sunday night.
It was far from convincing and the Tigers trailed by 10 at halftime, but they showed their scrapping qualities to outscore the Suns six goals to one in the last two quarters. Trent Cotchin led the midfield well and Dylan Grimes shone in defence.
Richmond are on a nine-match winning streak against Essendon, which encompasses the last five Dreamtime at the ’G fixtures. The Tigers won by 23 points last season with Bachar Houli earning the Yiooken Award.
The venue may be unfamiliar but the result promises to be the same, with the Tigers – overwhelming favourites according to the midweek odds and most AFL round 13 tips – set to land another body blow to the Bombers’ top-eight chances.
