The Bombers will be looking to keep in touch with the top eight when they host the rested Giants at Marvel Stadium on Thursday night. The Dons were lucky to lose by just 35 points against the Eagles in round 15, with the hosts having a whopping 36 scoring shots, but managing only 14 goals. Despite a strong start, Essendon faded badly in the second and third quarters to continue their inconsistent season. The Giants’ last game was in Hobart against the Roos in round 14 where they came away 23 point winners.
A number of Bombers players showed good form in the VFL last weekend, with Aaron Francis kicking four goals despite usually taking up his position down back. Jake Stringer is expected to miss again, while Orazio Fantasia was far from his best against the Eagles with just six touches, giving under pressure coach John Worsfold plenty to ponder.
The loss of tagger Matt de Boer is big for the Giants, but the likes of Daniel Lloyd and Zac Langdon are on hand to replace the veteran midfielder, as Leon Cameron’s team look to maintain their spot in the top four. In their round 1 meeting, the Giants smacked the Bombers by 12 goals and while this one will be a lot closer, The Wolf can’t turn down the rested Giants, who have won four of their past five against Essendon and have a 6-1-2 record at Marvel Stadium against all teams since 2016.
