Collingwood Magpies may occupy seventh spot on the ladder, but they look anything but finals material right now and are arguably under more pressure than any other club coming into round 13.
The heavyweights have lost three of their last five and followed up shaky wins over the Swans and Crows with a horrible 56-point defeat to the Demons on Saturday. A host of key players have suffered injuries in the Pies’ recent outings, contributing to their goalscoring woes.
North Melbourne Kangaroos are second-last after winning just one of their last 10 – against the bottom-placed Crows. But they responded to a 57-point shellacking from the Dees in round 11 with a spirited effort against the high-flying Lions, losing by just a point.
The injury-hit Kangaroos will be buoyed by the performances of their up-and-coming players, while Jy Simpkin and ruckman Todd Goldstein were among their best at the Gabba.
Collingwood have won nine of their last 13 against North, but the Kangaroos romped to a 44-point win in round 15 last year. Each of the teams’ last four clashes were decided by 40-plus. But this one promises to be much tighter, with the desperate, out-of-sorts Magpies focusing on scrapping their way to four valuable competition points.
