Adelaide Crows vs Essendon Bombers Preview
Besieged off the field and battling on it, Adelaide Crows will take some stopping in the wooden-spoon race. Last weekend’s 23-point loss to St Kilda – after they competed well for most of the match – gave the Crows an 0–7 record.
No team has scored less or conceded more points than Adelaide.
The Crows’ task in getting off the mark doesn’t get much easier when they face an Essendon Bombers outfit desperate to put round 7 behind them.
The Bombers – touted as a genuine premiership chance during the lead-up – sank to a 42-point defeat to the Bulldogs, just their second loss of 2020. The effect of suspended Dylan Shiel’s absence was palpable and he’ll be missed again this week. Zach Merrett and David Zaharakis had decent 20-disposal games.
After winning just three of the previous 13 encounters, Essendon beat Adelaide in 2018 and ’19. Merrett (2 goals, 31 disposals) and the since-departed Mitch Brown (4 goals, 23 disposals) were the stars of last season’s 21-point win for the Bombers.
This is an ideal opportunity for the Bombers to confirm last weekend’s effort was a mere blip. Few AFL round 8 predictions will be favouring the Crows, who are a long way off the pace on both sides of the ball and will struggle to get close to the Bombers.
