Canterbury Bulldogs vs New Zealand Warriors Preview

A huge clash between two teams striving to stay in touch with the Top 8 and the second meeting of 2023 between Canterbury and the Warriors.

The Warriors made it five straight wins over the Bulldogs courtesy of a tense 16-14 result at Mt Smart Stadium in Round 4, with Shaun Johnson producing the solo match-winner.

The 4-6 Bulldogs snapped a three-match slide with a gritty 18-16 win in Wollongong in Round 9, but they were much worse than the 34-30 final scoreline looked in losing to Canberra in Magic Round.

Soft tries, errors and poor discipline told the story of a disappointing night out.

The Warriors are now 5-5 after losing three straight in a torturous 11-day period against the Storm, Roosters and Panthers.

While they never quite looked like getting on top against the premiers, they again showed remarkable resolve to hang in until the dying stages despite playing 20 minutes of the second half a man short, however Tohu Harris and Shaun Johnson were superb in the 18-6 defeat.

All hysteria aside, the Warriors have endured some tough and at-times baffling calls in recent weeks.

The coaching and playing group appears to have done a good job of not being preoccupied with the rub of the green, however, despite the media furore and their main sponsor’s extraordinary tirade.

The Warriors’ injury crisis has deepened with Ed Kosi and Jackson Ford ruled out. Rocco Berry gets the call-up at centre, while Ronald Volkman earns a recall at five-eighth with Dylan Walker reverting to a bench role and Josh Curran starting in the second-row.

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs get a huge boost with Josh Addo-Carr returning on the flank for rookie Declan Casey.

The Warriors have won only three of their 10 matches against Canterbury at Homebush and have won just two of their last eight against all opponents at the Sydney venue.

It’s the end of an arduous month for the Warriors before the Round 12 bye and they’ll be hellbent on heading into the much-needed break on a high note.

The consistency of their defence (conceding 19.8 points per game) compared to the erratic Bulldogs (25.8) plus Johnson’s class should be enough.
