Gold Coast Titans vs South Sydney Rabbitohs Preview

Drama and upheaval at other clubs in the NRL ladder’s lower reaches have steered the spotlight away from Gold Coast Titans, but no team is in more of a hole than Justin Holbrook’s 2021 finalists.

With just one win from their last nine games, the Titans had an opportunity to reroute their campaign against a depleted Cowboys side last Thursday – but they were pantsed 32-6 after leading 6-0 midway through the first half.

Compounding their woes, Jayden Campbell – a rare silver lining since returning from injury last month – is set for a long spell on the sidelines. AJ Brimson reverts to fullback, with ex-Warrior Paul Turner to make his club debut at five-eighth. Greg Marzhew and Patrick Herbert come in for Corey Thompson and Esan Marsters.

Inconsistent South Sydney continues to cling to eighth spot with a 6-6 record. They have won back-to-back just once, in Rounds 5 and 6 against the Dragons and Bulldogs, and are aiming to repeat that modest feat after thumping the Tigers 44-18 before last week’s bye.

The Rabbitohs trailed the Tigers at halftime but clicked into gear after the break with Alex Johnston bagging a hat-trick and the mercurial Cody Walker scoring twice.

Damien Cook, Cameron Murray and Jai Arrow are named to back up three days after Origin, as is Titans skipper Tino Fa’asuamaleaui. The Rabbitohs also get Tevita Tatola back.

The Rabbitohs are on a six-match winning streak against the Titans, including a pair of high-scoring victories at Robina in 2021 – 40-30 in Round 7 and 36-6 in Round 22.

Souths’ wins have all come against bottom-half teams. But the Titans certainly fit into the cannon fodder category – and with the second-worst defence in the NRL, there’s little to suggest they can manufacture an upset here. The Titans’ last seven losses were by seven points or more, while five of the Rabbitohs’ six wins were by 12-plus.
